Overview
Light therapy, also referred to as phototherapy or bright light therapy, utilizes specific wavelengths of light to address various medical issues. It can be effective for:
- **Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD: This therapy can enhance mood by simulating sunlight, which boosts serotonin production and reduces melatonin levels. Treatment options include light boxes and sunrise alarm clocks.
- **Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders**: Light therapy aids in regulating the circadian rhythm, the body's internal clock that daily functions. It can help alleviate insomnia linked to circadian rhythm disorders, such as jet lag or night shifts, using light visors for delivery.
- **Skin Conditions**: Light therapy is beneficial for treating acne and signs of photoaging. Blue light is effective for acne, while red light addresses both acne and photoaging.
- **Cancers and Skin Wound Infections**: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) employs light-sensitive medication and a light source to eliminate abnormal cells, treating certain skin and eye conditions, as well as specific cancers.
- **Psoriasis**: The excimer laser, approved by the FDA, targets chronic, localized psoriasis plaques with a high-intensity UVB beam for mild-to-moderate cases.
